(This post was written long before I decided to travel around the world by bicycle. I have kept the post for historical purposes. At the time the post was originally written, the idea was to spend a much shorter time, travelling by trains, buses, ferries, and so on)
I’m sometimes asked why I’m doing such a big trip.
I’ve often thought about doing smaller trips. Even to the point of cancelling previous round the world trip plans. However, I like the flexibility of putting aside a long time period. For one, short trips are often too restrictive. You run the risk of looking at the clock, so to speak, than looking around. As a result, you end up feeling like you’re rushing from one place to the next.
It may seen like a bit of a contradiction. However, having an itinerary actually gives you the freedom to be flexible. You can choose to change, or even ignore, it. But if you don’t have an itinerary at all, then the only choice you have is to have no plan to follow.
Would love anyone else’s thoughts!
