Update 17/06/2021: Route direction change – Bondi to Freo! New post coming shortly!
I hereby announce the launch of Cycle Against the Beast 2021 – from Fremantle to Bondi Beach, between 4/07/2021 and 26/09/2021! This will be a 5,300 kilometre bicycle ride, from coast to cast, raising funds and awareness for the fight against the Beast of a disease called MND – Motor Neurone Disease (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The charity that I will be cycling for is FightMND. FightMND (the public face of the Cure for MND Foundation) is at the forefont of funding research into MND.
This will be by far the most challenging thing I’ve done yet. After all, cycling across the country is no small feat! On the morning of the 4th of July (at around 08:30), I will be setting off from Bathers Beach, in Fremantle, on the shores of the Indian Ocean, setting course for Bondi Beach, which is on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Over a period of 85 days, I will be making my way through Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT – as per my route map below. (Update: my route will now not be taking me through Victoria – the map below has been updated to reflect this). On the afternoon of the 26th of September, at around 16:30, I will arrive at my destination of Bondi Beach.
As I cross the country, I will be updating my blog as much as possible – as well as filming (though, the videos probably won’t be live until after I finish – editing will take a little time). I will also be setting up a satellite tracking page, so you can monitor my progress in real time!
But what if there’s a Covid-19 outbreak in NSW, and WA closes its border?
Thankfully, I do have a backup plan. This involves a (currently) 5,000 km ride around New South Wales and the ACT. So, if things did go pear shaped, I will be cycling regardless.

Fight MND is the public face of the Cure for MND foundation – a not-for-profit charity foundation established in 2014. Their aim is to raise the profile of Motor Neurone Disease within Australia and abroad in the hopes that increased awareness may lead to not only better care for those affected by the disease, but also increased funding for vital research into finding a cure. Fight MND are at the forefront of funding MND research in Australia.
A registered charity (ACNC: 62740350704), the Cure For MND Foundation is endorsed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) with full DGR (deductible gift recipient) status. All donations over $2 to the foundation are fully tax deductible to Australian taxpayers.
